PrevenTAB – Research Project at the Institute of Information Systems in cooperation with Symeda GmbH

In the year 2009, Germany's economy reported production losses of EUR 45.8 billion caused by absence due to illness. That means 459.2 million man-days of absence. Obviously, musculosceletal disorders (especially backache) need to be set into focus: 22.8% of all absences are caused by this diagnosis. Moreover, chronification cases are growing, i.e. the average length of absence is raising. Concerning that the demographic change leads to a skilled worker shortage on the one hand and an aging population on the other hand, health care becomes an important competitive factor for all kind of enterprises and the business location Germany overall. This development can be taken for granted - on various characteristics - within the whole euro area.

In this research project, prevenTAB developed an instrument for the dynamic mobile motion analysis. As a goal, we were detecting position and motion deficits to deduce preventive and personalised excercises in realtime. The specific focus was on degenerations that lead to backache.

PrevenTAB worked on the follwing pattern: sensors create raw data about the poise of body and send them to a mobile device. For usability reasons and a broad acceptance, these shall be ordinary smart phones. A realtime motion analysis will give feedback in two different ways: a) pull modus, i.e. the prevenTAB app is open and shows a simple traffic light system; b) push modus, i.e. a sound signal or other alarm will appear. Depending on the purpose, the system is configured by the user itself or trained staff.
